Pickler is a musical "Grandma Moses," says Albin Q. Zak IV, a musicologist at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. "She is a true primitive whose superficial simplicity belies an inner sophistication that only the trained eye or ear can fully appreciate. There is no way an musically uneducated American Idol viewer could hear that."
I thought this was an interesting part of the article. By the way, the word primitive doesn't mean ugly or crude in this context, it is a style of folk painting.
Kellie sings in the style of Appalachian folk. It's a country style and it's beautiful and magnificent. It does have a lot of subtleties and nuances that people who are not used to hearing think are *mistakes*. And even though the article is obviously a spoof, it does make many points.
People not used to listening to country often miss ninety percent of what is there.
