Okay, I am so mad right now. Ever since I unistalled my Sims games earlier (I decided not to have them on the laptop afterall), my laptop won't read ANYTHING! No CDs, DVDs, flashdrives ... I don't know what to do! I really need them to work, but nothing I've done has helped. I've restarted numerous times, restored the computer, but still ... it's like when I put in a CD or plug in my flashdrive nothing is happening! This is the first real trouble I have had with my laptop and have been trying to get it to work for hours. I just don't know what to do anymore, have you guys ever had this problem or have any ideas how to fix this?
^ Umm, I'm not sure. It's a toshiba laptop, I think it uses Windows Vista. Can I still run a ScanDisc? and how do I do that? I'm not very goo with this stuff, lol.

OMG! That's terrible! It sounds like a virus or something!

I'm not familiar with Vista. I'll give you the step by step for XP. It may be similar enough that you can figure it out.
Go to My Computer. Then, right click on C drive. Click on PROPERTIES. Click on the TOOLS tab. It will say something like ERROR CHECKING/THIS OPTION WILL CHECK THE VOLUME FOR ERRORS. Click the CHECK NOW box. There are 2 boxes to put a check-mark in; 1) automatically fix file system errors 2) scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Put a check-mark in each box. Click on START. You'll get a message to re-boot; do it. Computer will shutdown and just before it actually boots, it will do some really neat stuff that fixes all kinds of weird problems.

^ Oh wow, thank you! I just went through the step by step process as you said, and found it. I'll see what happens, thanks so much!
*Edit - no such luck. The laptop says everything is working properly ... but I put a CD in, and it just sounds like it's having a hard time playing it now - like it's skipping or something, Idk (it's done this to all the CDs I've tried)... my mom said just to shut it down, but it's really going to bother me, lol.

Try doing it again. If it's working a little better now, maybe if you repeat the process it will help more.

RATS!
Sorry to hear the ScanDisc didn't help.
Your cd drive may be dirty. There is a cleaner cd that you can buy. It's made just for that kind of problem. At least, it's a cheap try. Working from the latest info that you provided, there may be a mechanical problem with the cd drive. It may need a new drive.
Now, this may sound hokey, but if it works for NASA, it can't be all bad. Put a known good cd in the cd drive. When it skips or just doesn't want to play at all, beat on it with your hand; fairly hard. That worked for me when my C drive wouldn't engage about 3 months ago. I was doing a re-boot and all I had was a blank screen with a cursor. I could hear a subtle "clicking" noise from the C drive area of my computer. So, with my hands, I beat on the sides of the box. It booted & has been fine (knock on wood) ever since.

I shut the laptop down overnight, and when I got up this morning I decided to try my Carrie DVD - and it worked perfectly fine. I put some CDs in and it STILL wouldn't work. I tried beating it, but nothing.
Ughh! I'll see if I can get cleaned or checked out, because it should NOT be doing this and I am starting to get very frusturated.
*Edit - well, my mom tried just about everything today, too ... she thinks it's a problem with the CD laser inside (or something inside concerning the CD drive). Everything else works perfectly fine ... but until we can get it fixed I'm just gonna have transfer my music through a flashdrive, as well as play no more games. I will keep trying the scandisk, though ... it seemed to make things on my computer run more smoothly anyway. Again, thanks for all your guys' help!!

^ Yeah, my friend mentioned that to me too, haha. I am either going to take it to get it fixed, or just save up for a better laptop. This laptop works fine, but I could use an "upgrade."
