Kellie Pickler Red High Heels
Sony/19/BNA | Critic: B You’d have to be a real Scrooge not to tap your foot to the first single from “American Idol” contestant Pickler’s CD debut, “Small Town Girl” (slated to arrive Oct. 31 amid a fall flood of “Idol”-related releases from Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia and Pickler’s fifth season competitors Taylor Hicks, Katharine McPhee and Chris Daughtry).
Dixie Chicks production mastermind Blake Chancey serves hooks aplenty on the Pickler co-penned cut, which sounds a bit like a ’70s country classic thanks to layers of pedal steel. The lyrics’ assertive “hit me with your best shot” sentiment puts a sassy new spin on Kellie’s nauseatingly cute can’t-pronounce-salmon image.
Not surprisingly, she sounds markedly better than she did on TV. Though her vocal performance could use some more bottom end, Pickler’s off to a strong start in the studio. Look out, Carrie Underwood.
