Right. It plays mp3 files also. In fact, if you rip tunes from a CD in iTunes, you have the choice of importing them as AAC, AIFF, MP3, WAV, or something called "Apple lossless encoder". You can see those choices on the "Advanced" tab in the settings menu. I've used both AAC and MP3 for transfers to my iPod.
My iPod is a 40 gig model and it's about 4 years old now. I really like it. I might get a new one when they make a high capacity iPod Touch model.
