Label drops Ruben Studdard

Could be the best thing that ever happened to him.

I always liked Ruben, even if I didn't click with most of his music. Can't say the same for Clive.

I am glad that Ruben has great projects to fall back on.

RUBEN DROPPED BY LABEL

Dec. 21, 2007 -- 'AMERICAN Idol 2" winner Ruben Studdard has been quietly dropped by his record label.

J Records, the label run by record mogul Clive Davis, cut Ruben earlier this week, according to reports.

Studdard's first CD, "Soulful," was a big hit in 2003, going platinum.

And his second record, "I Need an Angel," a gospel, also sold well - despite being aimed at a specialty audience.

But the poor sales for his 2006 CD, "The Return," apparently prompted the label to let him go. That CD sold only 235,000 copies.

Studdard, meanwhile, has turned his attention to the stage.

He is reportedly preparing to star in a road-show version of the Broadway hit "Ain't Misbehavin'," playing the lead character, jazz great Fats Waller.

I don't follow Ruben that closely, but his low sales could very well be the result of poor promotion.

Interesting. The itunes and amazon reviews are good but this one only gave 2.5 of 5 stars

Review: Ruben Studdard's "The Return"

It sounds like his first 2 albums were great but his 3rd wasn't. Maybe it was the songs. As one of Kellie's Gimme the Mike judges said about AI, song choice is everything. How does an artist go from great to average songs? Another case of getting "Bo Biced" (forced to make a pop-like album) by Clive?

Also, Amazon's price is $18.97, which is outrageous!

Yeah I like Ruben and his voice a lot but his music wasn't always my taste (it was too hip hopish for me) During AI I thought he could've been the next Barry White or Luther Vandross of our generation. But this is the best thing that could've happen to him. His management was VERY poor and I hope better things come his way.

LOL yeah... I think it should have been released in the UK. Or at least do that with the next album, I think she'd be able to crossover and do well in our charts.

I didn't watch AI when Ruben was on, so I don't really know anything about him or his voice, but judging by what you guys have said, I do hope he gets better management now.

Ruben has a great voice and I've always liked him...hopefully this happening will be better for him in the long run.

OOOOOOOUCH!! Dang, no love for the velvet teddy bear! Taylor Hicks and some other past Idols should be a little worried. This supports my assertion that record labels only care about you as long as you help them pay the bills; otherwise, they kick you to the curb!
