CMT Awards: Broken-hearted good ole boys surrender to 'Idol'
CMT Awards: Broken-hearted good ole boys surrender to 'Idol'
Prior to the spring of 2006, lists of past winners of country music awards were repeat rundowns of good ole boys and girls: Brooks & Dunn, Rascal Flatts, George Strait, Martina McBride. Over the previous few years, Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban had managed to break in. Brad Paisley was knocking at the clubhouse door. Everybody appeared to be of the same Stetson-wearing, boot-tapping sort ruled by the Nashville studio and radio establishment.
The Dixie Chicks were the notable exceptions. Occasionally, they broke through the establishment and won awards after gaining prominence first on TV thanks to CMT, then radio. But the Nashville collective remained mostly an insulated world and alternate universe that couldn't be penetrated by outlanders.

Then Carrie Underwood changed all that, arriving via "American Idol," which suddenly held sway over Nashville, which the good ole boys didn't hanker to one bit. Sneakily, she followed the Dixie Chicks' route, arriving via television and circumventing Nashville radio, which later, reluctantly, had to accept Carrie once she was selling gazillions of CDs.
In 2006, Carrie won best female vocalist and best breakthrough performer at the CMTs for "Jesus Take the Wheel." Then there was no stopping her as she zoomed ahead at 100 mph on the country kudos derby track, winning best single next at the Academy of Country Music, then, yeowsa, crushing Faith Hill for best female vocalist at the holy of holies, the Country Music Assn. Awards.
One year later, she pulled off the same kudos sweep

Kellie has had every "lemon" life can scrape up thrown at her and she keeps making "lemonade".
3 CMT awards. What a night for Kellie. She has kept her down home personality and has built a great music career.
I am so proud of her.
GO Kellie!
Chuck

The article was longer. Here's the complete article:
Gold Derby Awards News by Tom O'Neil - The Envelope - LA Times
CMT Awards: Broken-hearted good ole boys surrender to 'Idol'

Awards.
One year later, she pulled off the same kudos sweep — CMT, ACM, then CMA — with "Before He Cheats."
Now, right behind her, comes Kellie Pickler, who wasn't even an "American Idol" winner. She'd lost! Nashville was suddenly force-fed an "Idol" reject when the breakout TV star won three CMTs last night (not losing a single race), including breakthrough video of the year ("I Wonder").
What an insult: she wasn't even present to accept! Doing a previously arranged private gig out in Arizona was much more important to her. (Good for you, Kellie!) Nonetheless, there was still enough "Idol" influence at the CMT ceremony to cause awards presenter Paula Abdul to gasp, "There are so many 'American Idol' alumni here, I feel like this is a reunion and I'm their mom."
Big award losers of the night: Brooks & Dunn, Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Tim McGraw and Willie Nelson. Gee, if Rascal Flatts hadn't won best group video, it might've been a total shutout for the good ole boys.
Somewhere backstage, probably in a dark space under a staircase, the boys were doing shots and fighting back tears while a perky made-for-TV star held forth as host at the podium on stage: Miley Cyrus.
Sorry, pardners! But, hey, at least Miley didn't win any CMT Awards, eh? Just wait till next year!

This article seems to have Carrie's last year's winnings confused with this year's Kellie wins! ???
Hey, I know Carrie wins a lot of awards, but does she have to get credit for awards somebody else won too? LOL

I thought the article was GREAT....what it is saying is what I have said since "DAY ONE"......the "good ole folks" (meaning artists) in Nashville really resented Carrie (IMO) but what can you do when an artisit is selling MILLIONS and MILLIONS of records and consistently having NO ONE hits....not much....Carrie came on the scene with such a HUGE fan base since she was the winner of AI there just was no stopping her. AND I was a number one Faith Hill fan until the famous "WHAT?"....now you can say what you want, but that did it for me. I find myself insulted everytime I think Kellie or Carrie is insulted and frustrated when Kellie doesn't get the recognition she has earned. (This little STG has worked her "elbows" off)
The article is saying, "You guys and gals of the "old guard" had better move on over because there's a "new gang in town". Kellie, I believe, has had a "hard row to hoe" because she, like Carrie, came to Nashville with TV based fans and some think the girls "haven't paid their dues"....I was SO GLAD when Carrie finally put Leann Rimes in her place. Now Miss Underwood is a sweet, polite, young woman from Oklahoma, but enough was enough. More and more artists are beginning to accept the fact that it is a "new day" and perhaps these THREE CMT awards will help them a little bit.....BUT you still see the "prejudice" on the country channels...CMT and GAC....and I just don't know if Nashville could have survived if Kellie had gotten any awards before now....change is difficult, especially as you get older....LOL. The smart artists would "embrace" the newcomers because it has only broadened the country music audience and introduced many fans to other artists who they have come to appreciate....for me, I just love Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland because she has such a distinct voice and I love their music. Haven't gotten to the place where I actually buy their cd's yet LOL even though I was a Brad Paisley fan at one time and have purchased his "Fifth Wheel" CD and also one by Keith Urban which I was disappointed in.....but, hey, when it comes to VOTING and REQUESTING I am a "dyed in the wool" KDP fan All The Way....Just Love That Girl...what can I say? Actually, think I have said enough.

I think you meant "Brad Paisley's 5th GEAR cd" .
"I'm still a guy" is hilarious.

Yeah I have heard about the paying your dues but deep down it is just jealousy. I believe Carrie was hated so much, they took some of it out on Kellie. I am not talking about fans. I am talking about Reba, Martina & Leanne. I think that is why Reba partnered herself with Kelly Clarkson. Don't get me wrong I am a big fan of Reba & Martina, not Leanne. I don't think they hate Taylor. I think they love Taylor because she didn't come from AI.
