Jimmy Carter supporting Kellie in radio again
I think this is more or less the printed version on AllAccess.com of what he said about Kellie in a recent radio interview posted elsewhere here. I have to say that, sadly, it has always been pretty much my view of Country radio too. I left in another paragraph about radio play.
"Fresh back from Hawaii ... There is a Country station in Honolulu. It sounded like a station programmed in South Alabama in the '80s! Music was modern, but presentation was awful!
Did hear a Colgate talent hunt commercial. Heard a Keith Urban song on AC radio and saw a sign for Sugarland at a downtown hall. Otherwise, not a lot of country in the 50th state.
No reason not to go ... wow, what a place. Go to VIDEOS on Ask Jimmy Carter.com and see Surfer Girl or Hawaii.
"Celebrity Apprentice" has been a great pr tool for Trace Adkins; I'm not so sure radio picked up on it very much ... another missed opportunity. Are some stations still not trying to help Kellie Pickler get going? The big city know-it-all boys who think she's not sophisticated enough? Some people's view of what Country radio is and is supposed to be is sure distorted! Or has become that way via consolidation and group-think.....
paragraphs edited out
....See where Dolly is yelling about older acts not getting airplay? Says we are as good as we ever were if we ever were. It is silly for Country to have a more restricted demographic list than Classic Rock or AC. A loyal format of listeners and the focus of the labels is 18-36, the CD buyers ... 25-54 women only want to hear Taylor and Carrie? Rascals and Keith? Why do I feel that is wrong? It's what the labels are telling you, not your audience. There a format thinker out in Radioland who knows how to have fun on the radio, like Disney Radio does with its family... "

It would be a terrible shame, and indicative of the stupidity of any station that didn't play Kellie because they think she's too unsophisticated.

The best country music is real and simple. It would also help if the label released more than 1 of Kellie's best songs. I can only imagine how powerful Wild Ponies would be on country radio.

THAT is her real problem with radio. You can promote the heck out of a song, but if they don't want to play it they're not going to play it.
Unfortunately, a lot of people hear "Kellie Pickler" and think "that fake, dumb blond that was on American Idol".
It seemed like she was moving in the right direction after the CMA performance, as far as people taking her more seriously. But then "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader" happened...
But judging from her recent interviews, the fallout from that really pissed her off. And she seems determined to have people start taking her more seriously.
And by all accounts, it seems she did a good job of that at the Country Radio Seminar a couple weeks ago. That's why I think they had her perform RHH and "Somebody to Love Me" instead of "Things" at the boat show. It was more about selling her to the radio people then selling any one song.

What do YOU think.......
Wild Ponies is one of my favorite songs on STG. Have you noticed that Kellie doesn't perform it at her concerts? Could it be that it is "hurtfull" for her because it reminds her about how her mother ran,ran,ran........?

I think you really hit the nail on the head with that one.

You really only get one chance to make a *good* impression. After that, it's really *hard* to change peoples mind.

While this might be a (ridiculous) issue, also if the label doesn't promote the heck out of Kellie's songs to radio then not enough stations are going to put them in their top 5, and I haven't seen anything to show that Sony BMG/BNA has promoted the heck out of any of Kellie's singles yet.

Good point and by the same token the label only has one shot at launching each album and single. Maybe they will do it right this time like Bucky's and Taylor's labels did and run countless ads in Country Aircheck promoting Kellie's singles.

Yes, she performed WP at only 1 or a few concerts, and it's the 1 song I'm most looking forward to hearing live. It's certainly one of the best songs on STG with awesome vocals, music, and lyrics. I can't imagine WP being harder than IW to perform for the reason you mentioned. She recorded WP for a friend who was a victim of abuse and for all victims of abuse. I was hoping WP would get released just to help abuse victims if nothing else, like I Wonder helped people with other problems. It's similar in theme to Indepedence Day and Alyssa Lies. Martina McBride's Day of Reckoning is a good read.
