March 11, 2008 - Kellie Pickler has gotten a lot of mileage out of "9 To 5" - she's sung the song on the Grand Ole Opry and added it to her set list for many of her concerts. The song is, of course, one of the biggest in the career of Dolly Parton, GAC's current Artist of the Month. In fact, Kellie says Dolly is one of her primary inspirations, but that doesn't mean she'll be trying to sound just like the Country Music Hall of Famer.
"I never want my music to mimic anyone else," Kellie told
The Salt Lake Tribune.
There are some distinct similarities between Kellie and Dolly, though. One of Dolly's first successful singles was called "Dumb Blonde" — but she's dumb like a fox. Kellie made an appearance on the FOX-TV show "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?" and had a ream of bloggers suggesting she's not too bright when she told host Jeff Foxworthy she thought Europe was a country.
Kellie was not faking it that night — she really didn't know Europe is a continent — but she's not apologizing, and doesn't think a single game-show question should be used as the yardstick for her I.Q.
"I'm just honest," she said. "It's just that one question I didn't know... The person on after me didn't make it past the first round."
Kellie was, in fact, smart enough to win a tidy $50,000 for the two charities she represented that night: AARP and the American Red Cross. Dolly would have been proud.
