Kellie Pickler's Iraq tour airs on GAC
Monday, February 11, 2008 – Kellie Pickler's first USO Tour to the Middle East to visit with the armed forces serving in "Operation Iraqi Freedom" was documented by Great American Country (GAC) last December and will premiere on the network Saturday, Feb. 16 at 9 p.m. eastern during "Kellie Pickler: My USO Diary."
In a video-diary format, Pickler shares her journey from Nashville to more than a half-dozen bases and isolated combat outposts scattered around Iraq. Her trip included manning the turret position on a Bradley Fighting Vehicle, greeting and performing for thousands of men and women in uniform and participating in promotion ceremonies. To travel from base to base, Pickler had to embark on her first helicopter ride on Black Hawk helicopters.
"That was one of the coolest things we've done," Pickler said. "I'd never flown in a helicopter before and now that we've been riding in choppers for the last few days I think I want one."
"I feel more protected and secure than I ever have in my life and I feel like I've made life-long friends and the troops are family to me. How can you not feel safe around our military, in fact, I wish they'd have been around when I was on Idol and Simon was near," she joked. "But seriously, I'm honored to have been a part of the USO tour, and I can't wait to do it again."
"Kellie Pickler: My USO Diary' will have encore airings on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. eastern.
