Metal and country team up for Station nightclub benefit
By Jed Gottlieb - Thursday, January 24, 2008
Twisted Sister and Alabama share few fans. But these musical jets and sharks aren’t above getting together for a good cause.
Organizers of a benefit show for the Station nightclub fire victims announced yesterday that country stars John Rich of Big & Rich, Alabama’s Randy Owen, Dierks Bentley, Kellie Pickler and Gretchen Wilson will be joining Twisted Sister, Tesla, Stryper and more on stage.
Sister frontman Dee Snider, who will emcee the metal portion of the show, extended the invite to Rich and his fellow cowboys and cowgirls to join the headbangers at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence on Feb. 25.
The best explanation for this little bit of country, little bit of heavy metal mash-up came from Snider who said, “This event is about music fans desperately in need, so it’s important (it’s) supported by musicians of all genres. We are so happy to welcome John Rich and his rowdy friends aboard for this very important mission.”
John Rich And Friends Aid Benefit For Fire Victims
January 24, 2008 — A fire in a Rhode Island nightclub shocked the nation in 2003, and five years later, many victims and their families still find their lives torn apart from the disaster.
John Rich was invited by a member of Twisted Sister to round up a country component for a benefit concert, and he came through big-time, bringing Gretchen Wilson, Dierks Bentley, Randy Owen and Kellie Pickler to the Phoenix Rising! concert, slated for Feb. 25 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I.
"All of my friends in country music responded immediately with yes," John says. "No matter what music you play or listen to, we are all one family, and we need to help each other out especially in time of need."
John's duo, Big & Rich, has broken down all kinds of stylistic barriers, so it's appropriate that the night's lineup covers a lot of musical ground. The show features such hard-rockers as Twisted Sister, Stryper, Tesla and Aaron Lewis, of Staind. Also on the bill are members of classic rock's Boston and the pop acts Chicago and Mr. Big.
TWISTED SISTER - TWISTED SISTER STAR BOOKS GREAT WHITE FIRE BENEFIT GIG
TWISTED SISTER rocker DEE SNIDER is organising a benefit concert for the survivors of the fire tragedy at a GREAT WHITE club gig in 2003. Twisted Sister, Tesla, Stryper, Jewel, Kellie Pickler and Tom Scholz will play the 25 February (08) fundraiser at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island. The concert, which will be broadcast on TV channel VH1 provided Snider can book popular headliners, will raise money to help pay the survivors' medical bills. Snider says, "For some burn victims, one day in the hospital is $70,000. This has to be like Live Aid." One hundred Great White fans were killed when a blaze swept through Rhode Island's The Station nightclub in 2003. The band's guitarist Ty Longley also perished and more than 200 were injured.
Like Kellie and Carrie I'm a little bit country, a little bit rock n roll. I mostly listen to country because today's rock isn't even rock. Country rocks and the music and vocals are much better! This sounds like a great concert! Who knows, maybe Kellie will put on her Bo Rhap outfit again and rock out! Or maybe she will sing a duet with Randy Owen - Alabama is awesome!

This looks like a wild night. Wish I could go.
I wonder if Kellie's appearance here indicates she's been working with John Rich on her CD this time around?
I also wonder if they might show some clips of this on the "Going Country" show (which has John Rich as host and Dee Snider as one of the contestants) on CMT?
Also, let's all be proud of Kellie's generosity to charities.
I don't know what she makes for each concert these days, but I would guess her appearance at this show is likely worth -- conservatively -- several thousand dollars. (It depends on how many songs she sings, I would guess.)
I know some Kellie Fans here have said that people have been giving them a hard time over her "Fifth-Grader" appearance, but when you add that $50,000 she earned that night to the value of her other charitable appearances, I would bet that Kellie has donated more to charity in the past year than some of those bashers will even earn total in a decade.

Good point! I don't think she has ever turned down a legit charity event she can do. It's wonderful of her to do this concert! She won't make a penny and will lose money on travel expenses unless someone else is picking up the tab. "All proceeds from ticket sales and charity auctions benefit the Station Family Fund, a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization founded by survivors of the Station Nightclub fire."
I just checked out Aaron Lewis' myspace and he has added more info on the concert and charity to his blog. This might be something Kellie's label can do as well to help sell more tickets. We need to get the word out and hopefully sell out this concert! It sounds like they might be auctioning autographed items too.
PHOENIX RISING! MUSICIANS UNITED TO BENEFIT THE VICTIMS OF THE STATION NIGHTCLUB FIRE
JOHN RICH, DIERKS BENTLEY, RANDY OWEN KELLIE PICKLER and GRETCHEN WILSON just added!
TOM SCHOLZ, AARON LEWIS (Staind), TWISTED SISTER, TESLA, KEVIN MAX, STRYPER and others scheduled to perform with rock host DEE SNIDER, Monday, February 25, 2008.
23 January 2008. Providence, Rhode Island: John Rich (Big & Rich), Alabama's Randy Owen, Dierks Bentley, Kellie Pickler and Gretchen Wilson have just been added to the Phoenix Rising! Musicians United to Benefit the Victims of the Station Nightclub Fire concert.
As previously announced, Tom Scholz (Boston), Aaron Lewis, Tesla, Twisted Sister, Kevin Max and Stryper are all confirmed to perform Monday, February 25, 2008 at Dunkin' Donut Center in Providence, Rhode Island. John Rich will host the country portion of the concert while Dee Snider will do the honors for the rock segments. Additional confirmed artists include are Emmy-nominated composer and musician Marc Bonilla who will serve as music director for the benefit, Carmine Appice's SLAM!, Gary Pihl (Boston), Eric Martin (Mr. Big), Danny Seraphine with CTA, Gary Hoey and others still to be announced. If John wants to put a quote in here, this is where it goes.
Dee Snider says, "This event is about music fans desperately in need, so it's important that "Phoenix Rising Musicians United to Benefit the Station Nightclub Fire Victims" be supported by musicians of all genres. We are so happy to welcome John Rich and his rowdy friends aboard for this very important mission." The charity event marks the fifth anniversary of Station Nightclub tragedy in Rhode Island, the fourth largest nightclub fire in U.S. history. 100 lives were lost, 200 others were seriously injured and 65 children lost one or both parents. Five years later, funds available for the survivors are woefully inadequate. Only 15 survivors of the fire qualified for Social Security benefits, and many are still unable to meet their monthly needs. All proceeds from ticket sales and charity auctions benefit the Station Family Fund, a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization founded by survivors of the Station Nightclub fire. The Station Family Fund is committed to providing survivor relief, including costs of ongoing treatment and rehabilitation. Organizers would like to acknowledge the incredible generosity of the Dunkin' Donuts Center Welcome to the Dunkin' Donuts Center! as well as East Coast Lighting, Scorpio Sound, WHJY and the many artists and others who are donating their time in putting together this event. The Station Family Fund, founded by survivors, family members and community members affected by the fire and the Wake Up To Love Foundation founded by Tesla drummer Troy Luccketta and his wife, Phyllis Luccketta are event organizers. While $100,000.00 was raised in 2005 from a benefit concert featuring Tesla, Shinedown, Pat Travers and Carmine Appice, those funds are in desperate need of replenishing.
Tickets on sale now at Ticketmaster.com. Prices range from $41.00 to $61.00.
