Metal and country team up for Station nightclub benefit

By Jed Gottlieb - Thursday, January 24, 2008

Twisted Sister and Alabama share few fans. But these musical jets and sharks aren’t above getting together for a good cause.

Organizers of a benefit show for the Station nightclub fire victims announced yesterday that country stars John Rich of Big & Rich, Alabama’s Randy Owen, Dierks Bentley, Kellie Pickler and Gretchen Wilson will be joining Twisted Sister, Tesla, Stryper and more on stage.

Sister frontman Dee Snider, who will emcee the metal portion of the show, extended the invite to Rich and his fellow cowboys and cowgirls to join the headbangers at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence on Feb. 25.

The best explanation for this little bit of country, little bit of heavy metal mash-up came from Snider who said, “This event is about music fans desperately in need, so it’s important (it’s) supported by musicians of all genres. We are so happy to welcome John Rich and his rowdy friends aboard for this very important mission.”

John Rich And Friends Aid Benefit For Fire Victims

January 24, 2008 — A fire in a Rhode Island nightclub shocked the nation in 2003, and five years later, many victims and their families still find their lives torn apart from the disaster.

John Rich was invited by a member of Twisted Sister to round up a country component for a benefit concert, and he came through big-time, bringing Gretchen Wilson, Dierks Bentley, Randy Owen and Kellie Pickler to the Phoenix Rising! concert, slated for Feb. 25 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I.

"All of my friends in country music responded immediately with yes," John says. "No matter what music you play or listen to, we are all one family, and we need to help each other out especially in time of need."

John's duo, Big & Rich, has broken down all kinds of stylistic barriers, so it's appropriate that the night's lineup covers a lot of musical ground. The show features such hard-rockers as Twisted Sister, Stryper, Tesla and Aaron Lewis, of Staind. Also on the bill are members of classic rock's Boston and the pop acts Chicago and Mr. Big.

TWISTED SISTER - TWISTED SISTER STAR BOOKS GREAT WHITE FIRE BENEFIT GIG

TWISTED SISTER rocker DEE SNIDER is organising a benefit concert for the survivors of the fire tragedy at a GREAT WHITE club gig in 2003. Twisted Sister, Tesla, Stryper, Jewel, Kellie Pickler and Tom Scholz will play the 25 February (08) fundraiser at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island. The concert, which will be broadcast on TV channel VH1 provided Snider can book popular headliners, will raise money to help pay the survivors' medical bills. Snider says, "For some burn victims, one day in the hospital is $70,000. This has to be like Live Aid." One hundred Great White fans were killed when a blaze swept through Rhode Island's The Station nightclub in 2003. The band's guitarist Ty Longley also perished and more than 200 were injured.

VH1 Classic and VH1 on Board to Televise 'VH1 Classic Presents: Aftermath: The Station Fire Five Years Later'

PROVIDENCE, R.I., Feb. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- VH1 Classic and VH1 will air "VH1 Classic Presents: AFTERMATH: The Station Fire Five Years Later" a one- hour special of concert highlights on Sunday, March 23, 2008 10:00 p.m.* from the upcoming Phoenix Rising! Musicians United to Benefit the Victims of the Station Nightclub Fire. John Rich (Big & Rich), Alabama's Randy Owen, Dierks Bentley, Kellie Pickler and Gretchen Wilson will be joining Aaron Lewis (Staind), Tesla, Twisted Sister, Kevin Max and Stryper featuring Tom Scholz and Gary Pihl of Boston and the just added, Winger among others.

All of the artists will be performing live on Monday, February 25, 2008 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island. John Rich will host the country portion of the concert while Dee Snider will do the honors for the rock segments. Emmy-nominated composer and musician Marc Bonilla who will serve as music director for the benefit, Carmine Appice's SLAM!, Eric Martin (Mr. Big), Danny Seraphine with CTA, Gary Hoey and others still to be announced.

"What happened at the Station Nightclub could have happened at any rock venue across the country," said Tom Calderone, Executive Vice President and General Manager, VH1. "We want to help raise awareness of the survivors' challenges to a national level through both VH1 Classic and VH1. We are hoping to tap into that huge community of music lovers and remind everyone about the redemptive power that music, and the great people who make it, can provide."

MUNI "TWO FOR ONE" PACKAGES JUST ANNOUNCED

This fire touched New England as a family and as so many of those serving the communities helped as they could, the decision has been made for all New England municipal and state workers (fire, police, educators, rescue and the like) to be eligible to participate in a two for one ticket purchase. Anyone with these credentials can present their ID at the Dunkin' Donuts box office**, purchase one ticket at any price level and get the second ticket at the same price level for free.

The charity event marks the fifth anniversary of the Station Nightclub tragedy in Rhode Island, the fourth largest nightclub fire in U.S. history. 100 lives were lost, 200 others were seriously injured and 65 children lost one or both parents. Five years later, funds available for the survivors are woefully inadequate. Only 15 survivors of the fire qualified for Social Security benefits, and many are still unable to meet their monthly needs.

All proceeds from ticket sales and charity auctions benefit the Station Family Fund, a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization founded by survivors of the Station Nightclub fire. The Station Family Fund is committed to providing survivor relief, including costs of ongoing treatment and rehabilitation.

"Dee Snider of Twisted Sister reached out to me to put together a coalition of country artists to help raise money for the families that have lost their loved ones," commented John Rich. "All of my friends in country music responded immediately with yes. No matter what music you play or listen to we are all one family, and we need to help each other out especially in time of need."

Dee Snider stated, "This event is about music fans desperately in need, so it's important that 'Phoenix Rising Musicians United to Benefit the Station Nightclub Fire Victims' be supported by musicians of all genres. We are so happy to welcome John Rich and his rowdy friends aboard for this very important mission."

The Station Family Fund, founded by survivors, family members and community members affected by the fire and the Wake Up To Love Foundation founded by Tesla drummer Troy Luccketta and his wife, Phyllis Luccketta are event organizers. While $100,000.00 was raised in 2005 from a benefit concert featuring Tesla, Shinedown, Pat Travers and Carmine Appice, those funds are in desperate need of replenishing.

Tickets are available at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets, charge by phone at 401-331-2211, or online at http://www.ticketmaster.com/. Prices range from $41.00 to $61.00.
