The top-selling artist of 2006 wasn’t a teen-pop, hip-hop, are hard-rock out-fit. Nope, last year’s biggest act in terms of sales was a little ol’ country band out of Ohio, Rascal Flatts. Still Feels Good, the trio’s fifth studio album, has sold in excess of five million units, and “Take Me There,” co-written by Kenny Chesney, was their fastest-rising # 1 single. The group’s 2006 tour played to one million fans 74 cities, with 61 venues sold-out. Rascal Flatts also took home the 2007 ACM Vocal Group of the Year, their fifth, tying them with super-group Alabama. Me and My Gang, the vocal trio’s previous disc, sold over 700,000 copies in its first week alone.
It’s been a wild ride for Garry, Jay, and Joe Don since they released their self-titled debut eight years ago. The trio’s lustrous harmonies and their music, as exhilarating as it is distinctive, hit a chord with country fans, and that first album, featuring “Praying for Daylight”, has gone multi-platinum. The double-platinum I Melt came as they won the CMA Horizon Award and led to nods as both the ACM’s and CMA’s Vocal Group of the Year. Feels Like Today (2004) debuted at #1 in both pop and country charts and sold nearly five million copies and led to a host of awards and honors, including Grammys for Country Song of the Year (“Bless The Broken Road”) and Vocal Performance.
In total, Rascal Flatts has had nine #1 songs and 17 Top 10 hits. The band has played the Opry and appeared on the Cars soundtrack with its version of Tom Cochrane’s “Life Is A Highway,” which became one of 2006’s most digitally downloaded tunes. All three members have settled into married life, and all are committed to sharing their good fortune. To cite just one charity, they have donated $1.4 million to the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.
