Cricket Pavilion (7/1/07) Review (IT'S REALLY LONG)
I have reviewed all the opening acts and Brad too, so if you wanna scroll down, I understand! I'll post some pictures when we finally get them off of our camera!!
I went to the “Bonfires and Amplifiers” concert in Phoenix, AZ at Cricket Pavilion. It was my first “big concert”, and I was really excited! We went to Jack in the Box, and I got curly fries and a bacon cheese burger, I remember it all! Then, we heard KNIX reporting from the concert, and talking to Kellie Pickler! She said she played tricks on Brad a lot and he was scared of her, and she wasn’t scared of him. Then Brad said, “We’ll see about that.” It was funny. I checked out the merchandise, and decided I’d get something later, because the line was REALLY long. We headed to our seats, which, weren’t the best, but were better than I thought they would be; we were in section 201, RR and got the seats 33-35. Again, I was really excited, and we took a bunch of pictures of my parents, and me, and how many people there were.
After waiting a half and hour, we heard in the loud speaker, a small clip of an announcer announcing Taylor Swift, about her platinum album, there was also a slow version of Tim McGraw. Taylor came out, energetic as ever, playing her acoustic guitar. Taylor said she was ecstatic to be here in Arizona because last year she was in high school! She sang five songs, I don’t know what order they were in, but here are my reviews for each performance.
Our Song
Taylor did a really great job with this song. She was really energetic, it was her first tour, and she kept kicking up and dancing and playing her guitar. I actually really liked this song, and had an extremely catchy chorus: Our song is the slam of screen doors/Sneakin’ out late/Tappin’ on your window/When you’re on the phone/And you talk real slow/Cause it’s late and your mama don’t know. I like the way she sings, “Mama don’t know”.
Picture to Burn
Taylor introduced the song by saying, “I really hope you become my friend here, and I hope this song doesn’t butcher it. But when you break my heart, cheat on me, hurt my feelings, or are just mean to me, I’ll write a song about you.” The song was really funny, and in-your-face. The girls behind us we’re singing word FOR word! I hate that stupid ol’ pick up truck you never let me drive/You redneck heartbreak who’s really bad at lying/So watch me strike a match on all my wasted time/As far as I’m concerned you’re just another picture to burn! It was rock country, different for her, but it was awesome still!
Should’ve Said No
This wasn’t Taylor best performance or song, but I liked it. She introduced it by saying, “So I liked this guy, but I had a problem with him, he said ‘yes’ when he shoulda said ‘no’.” I think this was her least great performance. I go to the trouble to say “least great performance”, because Taylor was fantastic, saying worst makes it said bad, and she wasn’t at all!
Teardrops on My Guitar
Okay, Taylor Swift introduced this song as a “song about a guy who I had a crush on, but he had NO idea. He always talked about this other girl who he loved so much. So it was fun. He didn’t know I liked him, but the song has his name in it, his name’s Drew, so I’m guessing he knows.” The song was a little boring, but Taylor sang it really good! It’s her new single, too.
Tim McGraw
Tim McGraw is probably one of Taylor Swift’s most popular songs, it’s pretty good, and sounds weird when you hear the name “Tim McGraw”, but it’s a nice song, shows her vocals, Taylor wrote it all and played guitar on it. At the concert, she announced her band during the second verse, which was pretty cool. She also said “Turn Arizona radio on…” hahaha! This, I remember was her last song, it was sunset and the whole concert hall was singing along, so it was pretty…magical.
After a small intermission after Taylor, it was Jack Ingram. It was darker outside so they finally turned on the screens. I wish they had the screens for Taylor so we could have seen her.
I’m not sure what Jack Ingram sang; I know he sang Measure of a Man, that was fantastic! He sounds better live in concert then on the CD. He really rocked out, and had a good personality. He also sang Wherever You Are, I had no idea he sang this, and it was pretty good. Jack was my favorite, Kellie and Taylor were, but he was an awesome performer. He gave the “guitar caddy” one of his guitars, and the kid said, “THANKS RADIO SHACK!” because we won a contest there. Jack laughed saying, “You coulda thanked whoever bought you the tickets, your parents, but that’s cool.” He also sang Lips of an Angel, and it was much better than on his CD, everyone was singing it in the pavilion! For his last song, he sang Love You. I had no idea in the world he sang this song! It was his best performance. When he held out the microphone for people to sing the chorus, “LOVE YOU! LOVE THIS TOWN!” everyone sang loud and clear, but the voice died down, and no one knew the second part. It was funny!
Finally, it was time for Kellie, it was all-dark, and out burst through the speaker, Simon’s comments about Kellie being a “naughty little minx”. Everyone hurried back to his or her seats. I swear, there were more people sitting in the arena for Kellie then for Taylor and Jack. Out burst Kellie Pickler, my favorite American Idol contestant ever!
Kellie started it off by greeting the crowd, then sang one of my favorites from her Small Town Girl CD: Gotta Keep Moving. Everyone was cheering loudly and clapping and screaming for Kellie, and she really hit the high notes and got it word by word in this really fast song. I know cause, I of course was singing along.
Kellie then talked a small bit about her American Idol run, how she thanked everybody there for getting her where she was. She said, “This is one of my songs called Things That Never Cross a Man’s Mind. What does cross through there? Who knows! Who cares!” and the beginning of Things That Never Cross a Man’s Mind began. She started off a bit too early, beginning “I need to go shoppin-“ then singing it over, and also didn’t sing a certain part of the first verse, but sang the rest of the song flawless. I could tell it was a crowd-pleaser. These two teenage girls in cowgirl hats got up for this song, waving and singing along and stayed up all the rest of Kellie’s set! Kellie did a really great job, and it sounded exactly, and maybe even better than on the recording. After an energetic “whoop!” from Kellie, and the audience, I even got up out of my seat to yell, Kellie moved on to her next song.
“Everyone who watched American Idol last year, knows I used to work at Sonic, a roller-skatin’ waitress, workin’ 9 to 5, and man it was hard! But now, look where I am.” Kellie then burst in 9 to 5 by Dolly Parton, and on the screen, pictures of Kellie meeting Dolly flashed. Kellie sounded a lot like Dolly Parton, and even though I never heard the song, I magically sang along. Kellie did great, I hope she covers it for a single or album track some time. My mom sure liked it, and said she thought Kellie sounded like Dolly, and she also sang along!
Kellie then changed into her red high heels, and told the crowd “See, if you leave me or hurt me, I’ll write a song about ya! You guys probably know this one!” and she flawlessly sang Red High Heels, working the crowd, everyone was singing along! Even me, who felt a little weird singing, “You can watch me walk if you want to, I bet you want me back now, don’t you. I’m about to show you just how missing me feels in my red high heels”! GO KELLIE!
Kellie then introduced her next song I Wonder and said it was about her relationship with her mother; there wasn’t one. Kellie sat down on the catwalk, and flawlessly sang I Wonder, although it looked like she was holding back her tears, and at the end she let out a tear, but it worked. Everyone sang along to Kellie’s newest single, I even think my mom cried, and a whole lot of people did too, I was close to tears. Ms. Pickler strutted off the stage, thanking everyone and her band, saying “If I didn’t get a tan here [Arizona is SO DARN HOT!], then something’s wrong with me!” Everyone laughed, and an electric guitar, rock n’ roll-ish version of the I Wonder chorus, which was pretty great played. Everyone gave her a standing ovation. I wanted to yell out “ENCORE! ENCORE!” but didn’t think it’d be appropriate.
After a few minutes, Brad Paisley came on, everyone stood up, and Paisley opened up with Online, which had all the screens up on the stage at work which fake instant messages, the video and of course the close up of Brad. He also sang She’s Everything, which echoed through out the pavilion as everyone sang word-for-word, the hilarious I’m Still a Guy, Whiskey Lullaby a video duet with Allison Krauss, an animation video for with he played guitar for, Ticks but Kellie and Taylor and Jack didn’t come out and do their exterminator and tick thing, they probably did that for that show only, or for only a few. Brad also sang Celebrity, plus he complemented all the opening acts, saying soon they’ll be headlining. I really hope they do, they were good, anyways, I also got some merchandise during his set, I didn’t have enough for a t-shirt, so I got an autographed picture of Kellie Pickler, one where she’s in the field*. He ended with almost a five or seven minute rendition of his hit Alcohol. He got a huge applause, and did a few encore songs.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to stay to meet and greet Kellie Pickler, Taylor Swift or Jack Ingram because the concert ended at eleven P.M, and my step dad had work the next day, and we had to pick up my sisters from my grandma’s house because she was going to bed, but it was a kick-butt concert, and I keep reliving it every day! I really hope Kellie does her own concert, because she was my favorite, but Taylor and Jack were much better then I originally thought, and Brad Paisley was great too.
GO PICKLER! GO TAYLOR! GO JACK! GO BRAD! Everyone should go see this concert, it rocked, best I’ve ever seen (out of all two concerts I have seen)
