Idol sales: Late but firmly packed with data
My apologies -- the entire day has been spent drowning in numbers from Nielsen SoundScan's year-end report. I will add Idol-related highlights to the end of this post, but first, the regular weekly Idol sales report (expanded to include last week's numbers, when I was gone).
When we last left Carrie's Carnival Ride, it was No. 9 on the Billboard album chart, having sold 138,000. The next week (Dec. 17-23, prime holiday shopping), it jumped to 7 with 216,000 sold. This past week, incorporating the record industry's traditional post-Christmas crash, it fell to 11 with 72,000, a somewhat-larger-than-usual 67% (compared to most of the albums in the top 20). Total is now 1.69 million.
Daughtry had been 28, moved to 21 before Christmas with an 80% increase to 107,000, and then fell back down to 28 this week, dropping 59% to 44,000. Total is now 3.62 million.
Jordin had fallen 26-28 but jumped to 89,000 sales, a 44% boost. Now she's at 40, having sold 36,000, a 59% drop. Total is 407,000, which means gold is at least in sight.
Carrie's Some Hearts climbed 59-55 just before Christmas, selling 47,000 (up 50%), then fell to 65, selling 23,000 (down 51%). Total is 6.19 million.
Blake was one of the few albums the week before Christmas to suffer a sales decline (albeit a minor one, 4.5%), to 55,000, which dropped him 32-44 on the chart. Now he's down to No. 76, selling 20,000, a 64% drop.Total stands at 231,000.
Kellie had leaped from 200 to 169, selling in the mid-13,000s, a 69% jump. Now, however, she's off the chart again, selling 6,000. Her total is 698,000, meaning she should pass Taylor next week.
Making a surprise return to the chart this week is Elliott's Sounds of the Season, which must have snagged a lot of last-minute pre-Christmas buyers. It sold about 11,000 (up from 8,800) to return at No. 123, bringing its total to 56,000.
Off-chart Idols (except Kellie, obviously) and year-end tidbits follow.
I'll cram two weeks' worth of sales info into a quick, efficient format:
Kelly, Breakaway: 6,000 this week (14,000 last week; 5.93 million total)
Kelly, My December: 5,000 (11,000; 737,000 total)
Elliott: 5,000 (11,000; 482,000 total)
Clay (Christmas album): 3,000 (8,000; 1.4 million total)
Clay (Thousand): 400 (800; 522,000 total)
Clay (All Is Well EP): 200 (400; 52,000 total)
Bucky: 2,500 (7,000; 316,000 total)
Bo: 1,500 (4,000; 36,000 total)
Fantasia: 1,300 (2,000; 501,000 total -- a milestone passed there)
Mandisa: 1,300 (3,000; 66,500 total)
Mandisa (Xmas): 200 (500; 2,800 total)
Katharine: 800 (1,200; 365,000 total)
Taylor: 400 (700; 699,000 total)
Constantine: 300 (500; 23,000 total)
Ruben: 100 (200; 236,000 total)
Paris: 100 (100; 20,000 total)
Kimberley (Based): 100 (200; 17,000 total)
Kimberley (Xmas): 100 (200; 2,200 total)
Before I get to the year-end standings, Stormiya had a request in about album sales totals for certain more obscure Idols, so here goes.
Jim Verraros, Rollercoaster: 4,000 (rounded, of course)
Ayla Brown, Forward: 3,000
Jon Paul Lewis, Stories From Hollywood: 1,000
Nikki McKibbin, Unleashed: not found in SoundScan system
Lisa Leuschner, Reality: Found in SoundScan system but sales are what the company refers to as "negligible," which means not yet in three figures.
