I didn't watch season 1 of AI, so I was not very familiar with Tamyra.
However, I recently watched the entire first season of AI on AI Rewind and I was completely blown away by the extraordinary talent of Tamyra Gray. She was amazing! I think one of the most ridiculous voting results in AI history was her getting voted off instead of Nikki McKibbin. Imo, she was not only far superior to Nikki but Justin as well, as did all three judges. The final two should have been Kelly and Tamyra. What a phenomenol finale that would have been.

After one performance, Simon said it was the best performance on TV he had ever heard in his life. All three judges couldn't comprehend why she hadn't already been discovered.

But what's happened to her since? I haven't heard much about her.

She was on a show called Boston Public for like a season and she put out a CD. I know she recently got married but I havent really heard much since. I am pretty sure she is singing in that song writing competition that idol is having pretty soon.

She's working on her second album. It sucks thta idol was not the powerhouse that is now, back then, If it had been she'd be a huge superstar.

"American Idol" Finalist Tamyra Gray Will Play Mimi in Rent

Tamyra Gray, the popular first season finalist of "American Idol," will join the cast of Broadway's Rent May 29, playing Mimi Marquez.

Gray, who finished in fourth place on "Idol," will don latex pants in the show through Nov. 25 at the Nederlander Theatre.

After "American Idol," Tamyra Gray landed a recurring role on the hit television series "Boston Public" as well as guest spots on shows such as "What I Like About You" and "All of Us." She's no stranger to Broadway: Gray made her Broadway debut in the Bollywood-themed musical Bombay Dreams.

She penned the songs "I Believe" for "Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino (who is now on Broadway in The Color Purple) and "You Thought Wrong" for first season champion Kelly Clarkson. Gray also appeared in the film "The Gospel."
