-Ratings Breakdown:
Led by the live American Idol results show (and opposite two-thirds of
CBS’ schedule in repeats), Fox got over the “hump” in winning fashion.
Tied for second were ABC and CBS, with ABC No. 2 in adults 18-49 and
CBS second in total viewers. NBC finished third in total viewers and
fourth in the demo, while cellar-dweller The CW remained in the No. 5
spot.
Beginning with 8 p.m., the time period premiere of ABC’s painfully
ordinary The Great American Dream Vote was a big ol’ nightmare at a
last-place 4.56 million viewers and a 1.5/ 4 among adults 18-49. First
in the hour was Fox’s underrated Bones (Viewers: 10.24 million;
A18-49: 3.6/11), followed by CBS’ on-the-fence Jericho (Viewers: 8.43
million; A18-49: 2.4/ 7 – tied with America’s Next Top Model), which
did not benefit by the recent 10-week absence. Rounding off the time
period were CW success America’s Next Top Model (Viewers: #4, 5.18
million; A18-49: #2t, 2.4/ 8), followed by NBC’s struggling Friday
Night Lights (Viewers: #4, 5.75 million; A18-49: #4, 2.1/ 6) and the
aforementioned Great American Dream Vote. To the fans of Friday Night
Lights wondering if there is any chance of a second season,
considering NBC is likely to renew 30 Rock, does it really need
another ratings-challenged freshman series to return?
Fox, of course, led the 9 p.m. hour care of the live American Idol
results show (Viewers: #1, 26.39 million; A18-49: #1, 10.7/28)
and the creatively improved ‘Til Death (Viewers: #1, 14.45 million; A18-49:
#1, 6.3/16). But retention for ‘Til Death out of American Idol was,
unfortunately, just 55 percent in viewers and 59 percent among adults
18-49. If Fox gives ‘Til Death a second season, why not bring in a
pesky mother-in-law to move in with Eddie and Joy?
Also at 9 p.m. was a repeat of CBS’ Criminal Minds (Viewers: #2, 10.99
million; A18-49: #2, 2.8/ 7), which built by a hefty 2.56 million
viewers and 17 percent in the demo from lead-in Jericho. Next was
expected-to-be canceled Crossing Jordan on NBC (Viewers: #3, 6.97
million; A18-49: #4, 1.8/ 5), followed by struggling ABC sitcoms
According to Jim (Viewers: #4, 4.49 million; A18-49: #3, 1.8/ 5) and
In Case of Emergency (Viewers: #4, 4.38 million; A18-49: #4, 1.9/ 5),
and a repeat of Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll
on The CW (Viewers: #5, 3.15 million; A18-49: #5, 1.4/ 5). Comparably,
the Pussycat Dolls encore built from the original telecast one night
earlier (Viewers: 2.67 million; A18-49: 1.2/ 3 on March 27, based on
the final nationals) by 480,000 viewers and 17 percent among adults
18-49. Yes…that’s unheard of for a reality/competition.
ABC’s Lost moved into the top spot at 10 p.m., with 11.24 million
viewers and a 5.0/15 among adults 18-49. But compared to a repeat of
CBS’ CSI: NY (Viewers: #2, 10.69 million; A18-49: #2, 2.9/ 8), its
advantage was only 550,000 viewers. For comparative purposes, the
final national performance for Lost at 9 p.m. on the year-ago evening
(March 29, 2006) was a considerably heftier 16.21 million viewers and
a 6.7/16 among adults 18-49. No…it’s not what it used to be.
Last at 10 p.m. was NBC’s Medium (Viewers: #3, 7.60 million; A18-49:
#3, 2.4/ 7), which…all together now…would benefit if NBC moved it back
to its original Monday 10 p.m. time period (out of Heroes).
