-Ratings Breakdown:
Fox roared past the Tuesday competition, of course, care of another
two-hour edition of American Idol, which beat the five competing
networks combined with 29.43 million viewers and an 11.6 rating/30
share among adults 18-49. Take a look at the half-hour breakdown:
American Idol
8:00 p.m. Viewers: 24.92 million, A18-49: 9.7/28
8:30 p.m. Viewers: 29.78 million, A18-49: 11.7/30
9:00 p.m. Viewers: 31.00 million, A18-49: 12.2/30
9:30 p.m. Viewers: 32.02 million, A18-49: 12.7/30
CBS managed to get some traction opposite the Idol juggernaut with
dramas NCIS (Viewers: 15.49 million; A18-49: 3.7/10) and The Unit
(Viewers: 12/04 million; A18-49: 3.4/ 8) from 8-10 p.m. The Eye net
capped off the evening with a repeat of CSI first in the 10 p.m. hour
(opposite a repeat of NBC’s Law & Order: SVU) at 9.95 million viewers
and a 2.6/ 7 among adults 18-49. Unlike serialized dramas, the benefit
of a self-contained crime solving scripted hour like CSI is the
off-network afterlife.
NBC finished third overall with its combination of Dateline (Viewers:
#3, 5.83 million; A18-49: #3, 2.0/ 6), a repeat of Law & Order:
Criminal Intent (Viewers: #3, 6.38 million; A18-49: #3t, 1.7/ 4), and
a repeat of the aforementioned Law & Order: SVU (Viewers: #2, 7/46
million; A18-49: #2t, 2.5/ 7). Although I always say you can’t judge a
show by a repeat, let’s be honest: Law & Order: SVU is getting tired.
Next was ABC’s line-up of a repeat of America’s Funniest Home Videos
(Viewers: #4, 5.42 million; A18-49: #4, 1.6/ 4), the season – or
series – finale of Primetime: The Outsiders (Viewers: #4, 5.03
million; A18-49: #3t, 1.7/ 4), and an original installment of Boston
Legal (Viewers: #2, 9.05 million; A18-49: #2t, 2.5/ 7).
Although The CW will be quick to commend week three of Pussycat Dolls
Present: The Search for the Next Doll, which built from a repeat of
lead-in Gilmore Girls by 910,000 viewers (2.13 to 3.04 million) and 75
percent among adults 18-49 (0.8/ 2 to 1.4/ 3), this is still nothing
to jump up and down about.
