I think the powers that be decided even before Chris got voted off that he was their man.
The reaction from Chris' fans set up a sympathetic chain reaction.
I remember people that had only seen Idol a few times saying how mad they were that he got voted off.
At the concert I attended, people were cheering louder for him than anyone, even though it was it was clearly NOT a rocker crowd.
I think the time was right also for another rocker to come along and fill a void. Maybe it's just me, but I can't remember a new rock singer or group in the last 15 years that measures up to the best bands of the '70s, '80s or early '90s.
Go ahead, call me names and shoot me, but it's like someone pulled the plug on rock after Kurt Cobain died.
The quality of Chris' CD, even if most of the songs have a similar sound, is simply better than just about anything from other rock groups I have heard lately.
